Where to Find Affordable Homes in Ontario

There’s a lot to love about living in Ontario. Home to great people, welcoming communities, beautiful scenery, and endless educational and employment opportunities, Canada’s largest province offers the whole package.

That said, for all of Ontario’s perks, it is known for being one of Canada’s most expensive areas – especially in terms of real estate. However, this reputation doesn’t always reflect every last part of the province!

In fact, there are still lots of places to find affordable homes in Ontario. You just need to know where to look – that’s where we come in.

As long-serving real estate agents in Durham Region and Kawartha Lakes, we live and work in some of Ontario’s best (and most accessible) communities. Including some of the few places where you can still find properties under 1 million dollars near the Greater Toronto Area

In this blog, we’ll share a few of the most affordable places to live in Ontario, in our neck of the woods.

Port Perry

Port Perry is one of the best places to live and buy a house in Ontario – and if you’ve read our blog before, you know just how much we love it. Along with offering a wide range of affordable houses, Port Perry’s lifestyle is second to none.

Home to a little less than 10,000 residents, Port Perry is close-knit, but it’s not your average small town either. Despite its size, you’ll find all kinds of big city amenities and conveniences around town. Not to mention, it’s only about 80 kilometres from Toronto’s core, making it a great fit for commuters.

Compared to the other communities on this list, average house prices in Port Perry are on the higher end. However, there are still a heck of a lot more affordable houses than other parts of the province.

Lindsay

Another great place to look if you’re hunting for affordable homes in Ontario is Lindsay. Part of the larger City of Kawartha Lakes, Lindsay is a vibrant yet down-to-earth community with a charming downtown area and plenty of natural scenery.

On the map, Lindsay is tucked between Sturgeon Lake and Lake Scugog, right along the Scugog River. If life by the water and all the things that come with it (boating, fishing, ice skating, swimming, etc.) sounds good to you, Lindsay should definitely be on your radar.

Little Britain

Although the word is slowly getting out, not everyone has heard of Little Britain, Ontario, and if you ask us, it’s one of the most underrated small towns near Toronto, being about a 90-minute drive away.

Of course, there’s a lot more to love about Little Britain than just proximity to the big city. For starters, it’s one of the best, most affordable places to raise a family in Canada, featuring a quaint country ambience, great homes and schools, and plenty of room to grow.

Out in the Country

If you’re looking for afffordable houses in Ontario, and don’t mind country living, we’ve got great news. Some of the most affordable places to live in Ontario can be found in the rural communities of Durham Region and Kawartha Lakes. From acreages, working farms and waterfront properties, to hamlets and villages, there’s lots of affordable real estate out in the country.

Some country communities in our neck of the woods include Brock Township, Blackstock/Nestleton, Greenbank/Seagrave, rural Kawartha Lakes, and Sunderland.

With that in mind, buying a house in the country comes with a whole lot of special considerations. So, if you’re thinking about going the rural living route, it’s a good idea to partner with a Realtor who actually specializes in rural homes and properties.
